This past week I was in Toronto working on a top secret project that will be unveiled this summer. If you follow me on Instagram you know it involves vegan food, a set kitchen, and lots of professional equipment. That’s all I can say for now!
Pav and I had the best time in Toronto. We ate so much good food, met so many amazing people, hung out with friends and explored the city. Keep reading below for my unofficial Toronto Vegan Guide and a little diary about what we got up to each day. Enjoy!
We flew into Toronto at 8:30 am. Got off the plane and managed to find our way to the Up Express Bloor station. Then we walked with suitcases in hand to find Through Being Cool vegan bakery. It was the only vegan place that opened as early as 9 am on a weekend. We were SO hungry (because we had to get up at 4:30am) but this place was everything we needed. Pawel got the breakfast burrito. It was the biggest burrito I have ever seen, complete with beans, guac, tofu scramble, potatoes, seitan, vegan cheese and veggies and it was only $10. It was basically heaven to us at that moment. I got a pizza roll (because who doesn’t want pizza for breakfast haha) and it was one of the best things I have ever tasted.
After that we took an Uber (for the first time ever) to Kensington Market where our Air Bnb was located. Since we had about 30 minutes before we could check in, we decided to go to Bunner’s bakeshop. Everything there is vegan, gluten free and nut free. It, again, was heaven to us. I got a mini cinnamon roll and ate it before I could take a photo.
After checking in and relaxing, we headed off to Fresh for some lunch with my friend Hannah who is living in Toronto for the year while she does her nutrition internship. I got a veggie burger and fries, and Pav got the poutine. Fresh was good, although not as good as I remembered from a few years before. However, it is always jam packed with people so maybe my burger was just having an off day :). Fresh has a huge menu so there is something for everyone!
We walked around the city with Hannah for a while and then went back to the Air Bnb in the late afternoon. Around 5pm we went to the nearby grocery store and picked up a loaf of bread, earth balance, jam and chips. We decided we didn’t want to eat out for breakfast, and that we would just have toast every day.
We were super tired and didn’t feel like going anywhere for dinner. But, as 7pm rolled around we got hungry and decided to walk to Cosmic Treats, which was just down the street from us. I got some fried jalapeño cheese sticks and Pav got a chick’n cesar wrap. They were good, but those cheese sticks were SO spicy. Just FYI Cosmic Treats has tofu crusted in sweet chilli heat Doritos. Not joking.
Sunday morning we had toast and then decided to walk to the Eaton Centre. That mall is so huge. Around 11am I got SO hungry. Probably because all I had for breakfast was toast haha. We basically ran to the food court and started looking around helplessly trying to figure out where the closest vegan option was. After a quick google search I found out there was an ALL VEGAN place in the food court called Urban Herbivore. You have no idea how happy we were! I got the coconut curry over purple rice and Pav got an unreal chickpea sandwich. The food there was so good and SO filling. The portions are huge. They also have a huge case of baked goods as well as fresh juice but we were so full from our meals we didn’t bother trying those.
After shopping we went back to the Air Bnb to drop off our bags and made a quick pit stop in Bunner’s again. Someone on Instagram recommended I get the carmelita, so I did. It was one of my best life decisions thus far. Pure buttery crumbley chocolate caramel goodness. We went back and ate it on our balcony, checking out the view of the CN tower.
After that we headed out in search of a sports bar so Pav could watch the Barcelona x Real Madrid soccer game. We ended up at The Puck where we had sangria and curly fries. Everyone in the bar was watching the game in jerseys, yelling at the TVs and sipping milkshakes. The atmosphere in there was so awesome and the fries were A+. The game ended around 5pm which was perfect because we were supposed to meet friends at Apiecalypse Now for dinner. We walked there, enjoying the amazing weather and sun. Apiecalypse Now was everything I dreamed. It is an all vegan pizza place that serves slices as well as whole pizzas. There isn’t a lot of space to sit and eat there so we took our slices over to Christie Park across the street and sat on the hill in the sun eating pizza. It was one of those picture perfect moments I will never forget :).
After that we went to another bar to watch more sports (my favourite lol…). Then we went to bed.
MONDAY & TUESDAY
Monday and Tuesday were work days. I worked from 7am – 7pm on Monday and 7 am – 3:30 pm on Tuesday. For dinner on Monday we went to King’s Cafe which is an all vegetarian/vegan chinese restaurant. The food was excellent and I highly reccomend the teriyaki seitan. We also got veggies and rice to go with it.
Wednesday was such a good day. We slept in, ate toast, and then walked to Queen Street W to go to CB2 so I could buy some new food props. That store is amazing! We went to a few other places and then took an Uber to Doomie’s for lunch. It was an intense vegan junk food experience. I am talking next level. We got mac and cheese balls, an oreo milkshake, I got the crispy chicken burger with buffalo fries and Pav got the Big Mac with animal fries. I will let the photos speak for themselves. I won’t lie, we had major stomach aches after but I couldn’t leave Toronto without experiencing Doomie’s so I don’t regret it haha.
After we recovered a bit from Doomie’s we went back to the Air Bnb to pack and chill for a bit.
Right before we headed to the airport we stopped in at The Goods, which is a shop owned by Lisa, the food stylist for the project I was working on. I was so excited to hear that she had her own vegan restaurant/shop! Her food is super healthy and delicious and she is such a lovely person. She gave us each a ginger shot (that stuff BURNS) and then Pav picked up a green smoothie while I opted for the tahini salad.
And that was that! A lot of food and a lot of fun were had in those 5 days. I hope this is helpful to any of you travelling to Toronto and I am so thankful for everyone’s suggestions for my trip!
