Book Club

Welcome to my book club! This isn’t a regular book club where everyone reads the same book at the same time. This book club is where I share my favourite books with you, and also let you know what I am currently reading, in hopes of passing along the inspiration and entertainment I get from them!

Entertainment/ Fiction

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?
Mindy Kaling

You NEED to get this on audiobook. Listening to Mindy read her own words makes it 1000 times better in my opinion! This is the kind of book I would listen to on the bus during my commute to school and it would have me laughing out loud. I downloaded it on Audible (my favourite audiobook service) and still listen to it whenever I am travelling alone. It feels like having a friend read to you!

Eat Pray Love
Elizabeth Gilbert

I read this book, saw the movie, AND listened to the audiobook at least twice each. It is one of my favourites and I could re-read it forever! I recommend this one in audiobook format too because Elizabeth Gilbert has such a calm, soothing voice. She reads it so beautifully and it is quite realizing to listen to!

Modern Romance
Aziz Ansari

Yet another one I recommend as an audiobook because Aziz Ansari’s voice is so damn entertaining to listen to! This book is super interesting and funny because it is so accurate. It’s a lighthearted but informative study of relationships in our modern day world. If you want to laugh at how ridiculous the dating scene is nowadays, and learn about romance in cultures around the world, have a listen to this book! Also, watch Parks and Recreation.

The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald

This book has been my favourite since I was 14. A classic! If you haven’t read it, pick up a copy at your local second hand store. I can almost guarantee they will have at least one :). Also, if you haven’t seen the movie, watch it! Now!

Faking It
Jennifer Crusie

If you are looking for a really light, fun, romance read, these are what I recommend! I always suggest one of these when my friends ask for a suggestion for a book to take on vacation. These two novels are related in that they share a few characters, but one does not follow the other in any sort of timeline. Jennifer Crusie has also written handfuls of other books so check those out as well!

Self-Help/ Spirituality

The Untethered Soul
Michael Singer

Get this on audiobook! Peter Berkrot narrates it on the Audible version and his voice is so clear but soft at the same time. The way he narrates the “in your own head” dialogue parts makes me laugh because it is so accurate. Listening to him read it is even better than reading it yourself. I recommend picking up paper copy of the book as well to follow along while you listen and underline your favourite parts.

The Power
Rhonda Byrne

This book changed my life. It is one of those books I like to have around me wherever I am so I can flip to a page and read whenever I need some guidance and help staying on track. I recommend this book to everyone! Note: I do not recommend this one in audiobook format. It has a lot of sound effects that in my opinion really distract from the words themselves and get a bit annoying.

Big Magic
Elizabeth Gilbert

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to live a creative life but is having a hard time making it happen. Like Eat Pray Love, this one is great in audiobook because Elizabeth Gilbert’s voice is so soothing and eloquent. This book will probably make you want to become an artist of some sort, so be warned!

Yoga Girl
Rachel Brathen

This is technically an autobiography but it contains so much wisdom and helpful advice for dealing with a whole range of life issues, I actually consider it somewhat of a self hep book. It really inspired me the first time I read it and I now I love flipping through it to find new yoga sequences. I have been following @yoga_girl on Instagram for as long as I can remember, so learning her life story and getting a more intimate look into her life was amazing.

Poetry

7,300 Days
Isabella Mente

I discovered this book through following Isabella on Instagram and read it all in one sitting. Her words are stunning and get me right in the feels. If you want to support a young, self-published author, definitely purchase this book! You can find it on Amazon.

Milk and Honey
Rupi Kaur

This book is packed full of powerful poems that speak to parts of your soul you didn’t know existed. Poetry is such an intimate way to know an author, and Milk and Honey is no exception. I like to take my favourite pen and underline the lines that speak to me. You’ll find there is a lot you resonate with in her beautiful poems.

  1. First off, I’m LOVING the new layout of your website! It’s so efficient and clean. Now onto the books. I really enjoyed “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” It really helped me get through high school actually! I also thoroughly enjoyed “Modern Romance” and still read it from time to time. You should watch Master of None if you don’t already! It’s one of my favorite shows ever. I definitely will look into your self-help/spirituality books because I’ve been wanting to get into those more. I’ve also been dying to read “7,300 Days”, it’s on my xmas wishlist so I’ll definitely check it out 🙂

I love the layout of the website as well! We are about the same age, and I would like to say that you are incredibly inspirational and I always look forward to your posts/videos/etc. I like your posts because you come across as “let’s be friends” and not “you should be exactly like me”. I think that this is really important, especially for younger kids who experience this a lot with other YouTube personalities. Happy New Year and keep it up girl!
