After lots of testing, I’ve learned that a perfect pan pizza can be as simple or as detailed as you want. I enjoy experimenting with toppings like I’ve shown on our many different pizza recipes. But when I want a reliable easy pizza recipe at home, pepperoni and cheese are all I need and sliceable mozzarella is my go-to!

Why is Pizza Hut’s pan pizza so timeless?

Pizza Hut’s pan pizza is famous for its crispy, golden crust and gooey cheese. But the secret to making it at home is a generous layer of oil in the pan, giving the crust that perfect, buttery crunch. That’s why I chose store-bought dough- It’s easy, fast, and still delivers a great result. I wouldn’t be doing my job though if I didn’t recommend the best ever homemade dough recipe, for those you want something a little more involved (and extra delicious)! Hint: it uses beer!

Pizza oven vs. regular oven (my personal opinion)

When I baked the pizza in both a regular kitchen oven and an outdoor propane pizza oven, both worked well. Though I have to say the outdoor oven gave it a slightly crispier edge, closer to that iconic Pizza Hut texture. I wouldn’t say I’m a pizza snob… But my wife probably would. Which is why I had to add the option for a pizza oven in this recipe. I love the way the recipe turns out, and it just feels more authentic if you ask me. Whether you use an oven or a pizza oven, the key is in the bake time. Get it right, and you’ll have a crust that’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, just like the original, but dairy-free!

Making your own vegan cheese that actually melts

Store-bought vegan cheese can be hit or miss (we’ve all been burned by those sad strands that never change shape after baking), but making your own mozzarella is a game-changer. It turns out you can create a creamy, meltable cheese that’s perfect for pizzas or sandwiches right at home. Sure, it took me a few tries, but I love making my own because I can control the texture and flavour (and it’s easier on the wallet).

Final notes on making a better pizza (I know what I’m talking about, I promise)

  • Want that extra cheesy feel? Double the mozzarella. I did this for a party we were hosting the other day. One batch of the vegan mozzarella usually lasts about a week, but using it all up in one evening is not only a whole vibe, it’s also a testament to how good my vegan mozzarella is!
  • Don’t have a pizza pan? Use any oven-safe round or square pan you have! Just make sure to grease it well for that crispy edge. The pan is really the signature of Pizza Hut’s crust. Any size pan will work, whether you’re making pizza for yourself or a crowd, as long as the pizza dough comes to the edges. A pizza will work on any sheet pan or pizza stone you normally use- but the pan makes for a golden bubbly crust due to the trapped oil underneath.

Speaking of perfect crispy edges, you’ll thank me for suggesting this brown sugar peach streusel topping dessert pizza. The only thing better than pizza for dinner is pizza for dinner AND dessert!

  • Be careful not to overcrowd the toppings for that perfect crust-to-topping ratio. Let this be your sign to have a small snack before making one of these pizzas because overcrowding your toppings can cause burning of the top layer, or even worse, undercooked dough. This is especially common when using a pizza oven, as the top and outer crust cooks so fast! Keep it simple and you’ll thank yourself for it.

Description

This vegan Pizza Hut pepperoni pan pizza copycat recipe uses store-bought dough for convenience, my sliceable vegan mozzarella, and simple vegan pepperoni. Crispy, cheesy, and dairy-free. Your new comfort food favourite!

Ingredients

  • 1/4  store bought pizza dough (approx 162g)
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1/2 cup store-bought vegan cheese or 2 slices homemade vegan mozzarella.
  • 1 sprig of fresh basil
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • optional: sprinkle of extra cheese (I used store-bought vegan feta)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. In a 8-inch cake pan, grease the bottom and sides with olive oil. Set aside.
  3. Take your store-bought pizza dough ball and quarter it. Roll out and stretch until it reaches the same circumference as the pan. Transfer to the pan and spread until the edges touch the sides. If you wish to use a propane pizza oven, see notes section.
  4. Add sauce, vegan pepperoni, homemade mozzarella, and a sprinkle of extra cheese, if using. Place into preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and pizza is cooked throughout.
  5. Remove from oven, slice and serve with fresh basil.

Notes

If using a propane pizza oven, after preheating to temperature, lower heat and cook dough until lightly browned on top. Proceed to step 4.

I tested using both a pizza oven, as well as a kitchen convection oven. Be careful not to undercook the dough using the propane pizza oven. By cooking the dough in the pan first, then adding the toppings before heating once again, you can melt the cheese as well as cook the crust.

Baking time changes for pizza oven instructions. Bake the dough on low once pizza stone is heated thoroughly for 5 minutes or until golden brown on top. Watch closely so as not to burn. Then add toppings and bake another 4-5 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is cooked.
