After a decade in the kitchen and many years of introducing plant-based foods into my life, I’ve learned the best recipes start as a “quick fix” and then turn into a staple.

So many of the recipes I saw online involved cashews, or niche vegan products, but this 5-minute ranch is anything but complicated! It’s quick and balanced, pairs perfectly with vegan buffalo wings and has officially earned a permanent spot in my fridge.

Getting it to actually taste fresh

So many ranch dressings fall flat because they chase a creamy texture but lack the bold flavours that make a good dip. If you’re using this as a dip for raw veggies, you need something that will really amp them up, right?

The key is to skip the complications. Use my favourite tried and tested base, vegan mayonnaise, for creaminess and lean into lots of herbs for a bold flavour.

  • A splash of lemon juice cuts through the richness to keep flavours bright.
  • Fresh parsley and dill elevate the dish compared to the dried version.
  • Use garlic powder over fresh garlic – it’s an easy swap for a smoother texture and less overpowering taste.

Chill before you pour!

Optional, of course (I have no patience to let something sit for long when the craving strikes). But if you can, let the vegan ranch dressing chill for 20 minutes or so in the fridge, which allows the whole flavour profile to mellow and round out.

Texture is everything (and totally easy!)

Like I said at the start, texture is usually top of mind when making ranch dressing. Do you want it thin and pourable for a salad? Thick enough to stick to whatever you’re dipping? If texture is something you want to play around with, here’s a few tricks to keep in mind:

  • Add the vinegar first, then whisk in the unsweetened soy milk a tablespoon at a time until the texture feels just right.
  • If it becomes too thin, simply add a bit more vegan mayo to help thicken it back up.
  • A quick way to test it is with a carrot stick: if the dressing runs right off, it’s too thin; if it clings in thick globs, it needs a splash more liquid.

Why store-bought is in the past

After testing countless dips and hitting more than a few disappointing dressings, I can finally say my dip game has levelled up – and this recipe is one to keep in your fridge at all times! Chill it in a jar and you’ll find excuses to drizzle it on everything. It stays creamy and fresh for up to a week and somehow tastes even better by day two.
