A monte cristo is a fried ham and cheese sandwich, that uses a batter similar to french toast on the outside. This version is vegan of course, and we even made our own seitan ham! This recipe was created for The Deli Series which is my new YouTube series showcasing recipes for main + side combos (all things you could find in a deli if I ever opened one!) Make sure to check out the split pea soup to go with this!
The recipe for the ham can be found here.Print
Monte Cristo Sandwich
This monte cristo sandwich is all plant-based!
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 2 sandwiches 1x
- 6 pieces of bread
- ¼ cup vegan mayo
- 2 slices of vegan cheese
- 4–6 slices of vegan ham
- powdered sugar (optional, for dusting overtop)
- ⅓ cup cubed firm tofu (about ¼ of a regular block)
- 1 cup nondairy milk
- 2 tsp sugar
Blend tofu, nondairy milk and sugar until smooth. Add to a shallow bowl.
Each sandwich uses 3 pieces of bread. For each sandwich: add mayo to one side of two slices, and both sides of the third slice. The piece of bread with mayo on both sides goes in the middle of the sandwich, and the vegan ham and cheese go between the pieces of bread with mayo on the inside. The outside of the sandwich should have no mayo on it. Watch the video for tutorial!
Heat a frying pan on medium heat and add a tbsp of butter.
When its starting to sizzle, dip the outside of the sandwich in the batter, then place in the frying pan. Cook a few minutes per side, until golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar (if desired) and enjoy!
